Notes on Martha Jane "Patsey" Heflin
Fauquier County deeds book 58 page 409 has William H. Payne as trustee for Martha and children, overseeing the 87 acre tract of land along Kettle Run near the Prince William County border. Her father's will, probated in 1858, provided that her
share of the estate was to be held in trust, free from the control of Albert G. Thayer, for her benefit until her death, at which time it was to be divided equally between her six youngest children (James, George W., Frank, Lucy, Millie, and
Buchanan). In 1860, the trustee purchased the 87 acre tract on which the family had been living for $450 and held it in trust until her death. After her death her six youngest children sold their undivided interests in the tract in a series of
conveyances between 1866 and 1897. There is no record that her husband Albert G. Thayer ever owned any land in his own right.
