Notes on Jonathan Mosholder
Also "Mausholder"
Burial: John and Johanna were buried on what was originally the Joe W. Croner Farm, near Beechdale, in Berlin, Brothers Valley, Somerset Co., PA. Supposedly there was a marker placed there Jul 11, 1992, and dedicated in a public ceremony. When
visited by Mickie & Jerry Parr (she's a decendent) the cemetery was located but the marker could not be found.
Emigration: John Mossholder or Mosholder as many spell the name, arrived in Philadelphia, PA, Oct 28, 1767 on the ship Minerva, John Spuriers from Rotterdam was the Master of the ship. John was then 17 years old, he only made his mark and not sign
the passenger list. He took the oath of Allegiance to England in Philadelphia Oct 29, 1767. He first Setteled in Cumberland Co., PA where it is said he probably married. He was thought to come to Brothers Valley Twp., Somerset Co., PA, Settling
near Berlin, about 1785.
Military Service: During the Revolutionary War John served two enlistments. He was a private on the list of Rangers on the Frontier 1778 to 1783, from Cumberland Co., PA. Private 2nd class in the 5th Co., *th Battalion, Cumberland Co, Militia from
1777 until he mustered out Aug 16, 1780, his residence was given as Guilford Twp., Cumberland Co., PA. His service has been proven for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, National numbers 263822 and 275301.
General: Some accounts show John Jr. born 1775 Cumberland Co., PA and Jacob born 1776. John Sr.'s willaqlso alludes to John Jr. being one of, if not the oldest by virtue of his selling land to him as well as naming him to be co-executor of his
will. This is the order taken to list the births rather than John Jr. being further down in the order of birth. Reasoning dthat one would think that the manesake of the father would be listed higher up in the order of the children, he was also
listed as being of age, which also makes him an older child. Since we have a definite date of 1775 on Jacob we have placed John Jr. a year earlier.
It might be noted that many of the children of John & Johanna were born in what is now Somerset Co., PA, which was formed from Bedford Co., APR 17, 1795, Bedford Co., was formed from Cumberland Co. in 1771 and parts of 32 counties were formed from
it. Cumberland Co. was formed in 1750 from Lancaster Co. and Lancaster Co. was formed in 1729 from Chester Co. which was formed in 1682. Source: Somerset County Outline and Supplement by Cassady, pg. 301:Tax List 1793, Brothersville Township, John
