Notes on William Van Winkle
William moved with his father and brothers to Jallsbury, Licking County, Ohio, in 1818 where he farmed. William was deeded 71 acres of land by Moses and Martha Van Winkle. On 12 Sep 1829, the eastern part of the SE quarter of Section 1 of
Fallsbury Township. This land is located to the east of the Moses Van Winkle homestead. Moses deeded this land "for $1 in consideration of natural love and affection". William farmed there until he died on 6 Sep 1852. He is buried in the Van
Winkle Cemetery. His estate was settled in Licking County on 20 Nov 1852. His son Peter Van Winkle was a minor in 1855, and his mother was living, but on 6 Nov 1855 the court appointed Frederick Zollars as his guardian.
After William's death, a dispute arose between the heirs over the71 acres, and on 10 Sep 1855, Clement and George Magruder of Coshocton County filed a lawsuit against Peter Van Winkle, Hester, James M Cardle of Illinois, Susan, and Sarah Beck of
Illinois (daughters of Maria Van Winkle) and William and Susan Taylor (widow of William Van Winkle). As a result, the 71 acres were sold at a sheriff's sale on 31 Jan 1856. William's wife, Susana, married William Taylor, 1855. Susana Bright
Van Winkle Taylor died 15 Jul 1869 at Fallsburg, Licking Co., and is buried in the Van Winkle Cemetery.
